Gwangmyeong City & Gwangmyeong Cave
Introduction of host
A massive amount of ores such as gold, sliver, bronze and zinc were mined for 60 years, from the Japanese occupation period, to 1972.
Gwangmyeong Cave, 7.8km long and 31,400㎡ area, was considered the largest gold mine in the country, with over 250 tons of minerals getting dug up at its peak.
At present, this cave is made of a total 8 layers from level 1 to level 7. The tunnels below level 2 are full of water thus, inaccessible, although its underground tunnels are formed along with the inclined shaft 1 and 2.
The new history of Gwangmyeong cave, along with shafts surrounded by hundreds of rocks, continues its 103-year old story.
Gwangmyeong cave, which has been turned into ‘The best Cavern Theme Park in Korea’, possesses not only the value of modern Korean industrial heritage but also of a creative future as a space for theme, culture and art.
Gwangmyeog city is looking forward to discover and utilize its unlimited potential and strength for another 100 years.
Healed by art, Gwangmeyong Cave is taking a step forward toward the bright future by waking up and even embracing its painful past.
